#AmanqiLoves: Syd and Pia

Our passion for jewelry constantly has us searching for new and inventive brands to add to our accessory drawer. On our hunt for exciting jewelry, we always find that the variety of brands never ceases to amaze us. One such brand we recently came across is New York-based Syd and Pia. Combining design, aesthetic and vision, Syd and Pia and its founder and designer Fernanda has been recreating abstract jewelry pieces which are equal parts chic and timeless.

Intrigued by the brand’s journey, we sat down with Fernanda to discuss all thins jewelry.

The Brand Journey

Fernanda: My inspiration has been two things, my love of jewellery and my daughters.  I wanted to go back to the learning process during college where we fabricated our own jewellery from beginning to end, it is a process that I missed so much during my career a a designer where the only thing we did was create collections on paper but not see the process through. I also wanted to show my daughters that as women we could do and achieve anything we set our minds to. I didn’t want them to grow up second guessing themselves.

The Many Sources of Inspiration

Fernanda: I usually look at architecture and sometimes visit galleries to see paintings, murals, etc.  I can look at a sculpture, a building over and over and always find new inspiration.

A Usual Day with The Team

Fernanda: Life is fun during the creating process and thereafter.  A day always consists of a cup of coffee before anything, no coffee the green grumpy monster comes out all day long.  After coffee is emails, follow by a visit to a trend site to see what is happening around the world in jewellery and street wear.  After emails, following up on creating pieces, ordering materials if we are running low.  Once the important tasks of the day are taken care of, social media.  I like to see who is doing what, what they are wearing, if they are shopping what they are looking for.  Who is happening and what can inspired us from all this.

The Impact of Social Media

Fernanda: Social media is working for us in the sense that there’s influencers out there wearing our brand, it is not that many but a few people are and we have done a few collabs with them and with urban wear brands, with this said; we always get message from people asking when and where they can purchase the product that is being worn by an influencer or a model if this is on a brand collab.

The Brand 5 Years From Now

Fernanda: I’m hoping to see the brand running itself meaning that it will be so well known that we will just create and people will always be on the lookout for the new.  We also want to be that brand that will influence the next generation.

The Insider Tip for Aspiring Designers

Fernanda: Don’t ever get discourage and give up. If at first you don’t succeed, try again.  Do your research of who it is you are targeting with your brand, know your customers too. You have to believe in your product and believe enough that the product can speak for itself, yet always be ready to answer questions since the product speaking is a metaphor.
