Q: Earrings or bracelets: which is more fun to design?
A: Earrings, definitely! They allow for a more dramatic and artistic expression because they frame the face and can be seen from all angles. I have personally always been more of an earrings person and the right kind of earrings as accessories and focal points can make or break a look. I personally have a collection of over 1,000 earrings, so earrings it definitely is!
Q: The first piece of jewelry you ever made: what was it?
A: The first piece of jewelry that I ever designed was a ring. I love wearing rings, and I feel the hands look and feel more expressive with the right kind of rings and accessories.
Q: Inspirational music or serene silence while you work?
A: Let there be music! It fuels my creativity, especially anything with rich, vibrant beats. I like listening to music that makes me feel happy—it sets the right tone and mood for me to design.
Q: Gemstone cut: round, emerald, or marquise?
A: Marquise. Its elongated shape and pointed ends have a certain elegance that enhances the aesthetic of my designs. I do love emerald cuts too as they have a very vintage and timeless appeal to them.
Q: Your dream collaboration, living or historical figure, who would it be?
A: I would have loved to collaborate with Frida Kahlo. Her bold spirit and unique style would have been an incredible influence on my designs. Iris Apfel is another person I absolutely look up to for her bold and vivacious style.
Q: Engraving or filigree: which intricate detail do you prefer?
A: I do like adding a bit of filigree to my pieces. The delicate and intricate art form allows me to infuse a touch of vintage grace into my contemporary designs. A bit of the old and a bit of the new.
Q: If your jewelry were a destination, where would it be?
A: India—the land of vibrant colors, intricate patterns, beautiful textures, and a blend of tradition and modernity, much like my designs.
Q: A jewelry-making technique you’re currently excited about mastering?
A: Enameling. I’m fascinated by the possibility of adding vibrant colors with a very smooth finish to my pieces. Enameling also helps bring out the vibrancy and sparkle of faceted and colored gemstones.
Q: The most exotic place you’ve drawn inspiration from?
A: The bohemian quarters of Prague, Czech Republic, and the winding streets of Istanbul, specifically the Grand Bazaar. The blend of colors, smells, people, artifacts, and the sheer beauty of the architecture and the city itself have always been inspiring.
Q: Personalized or ready-to-wear pieces: which do you enjoy creating more?
A: Ready-to-wear with a personalized touch and personalized pieces that can become ready-to-wear. My pieces should feel like they have a personal connection with their owners, and I am happy to personalize pieces depending on the client’s preference so they own a piece of Zome that is uniquely theirs.
Q: Your signature design element or motif?
A: Definitely the use of asymmetry and the unique combination of different types, colors, shapes, and sizes of stones, which add an unexpected twist to traditional designs. It is about piecing together a puzzle of stones and bringing it together to work as a beautiful whole.
Q: A must-have accessory other than jewelry for your ideal outfit?
A: I know this may sound idealistic, but I always feel that a smile is the best accessory one can carry with any outfit. Any jewelry or clothing worn definitely looks better on a happy wearer.
Q: The best jewelry tip you’ve ever received or given?
A: Always design with the wearer in mind—comfort is just as important as style. Also, always wear jewelry that feels like an extension of yourself. Jewelry should also be an extension of your personality, not just your style.
Q: One word to describe the feeling you want your wearers to experience.
A: Empowered. I want my jewelry to make wearers feel confident, bold, and beautiful.
Q: Future trends in jewelry design that excite you the most?
A: Sustainable luxury. I’m excited about the movement towards ethically sourced materials and eco-friendly practices in the jewelry industry. Also, the integration of technology, like augmented reality, which allows wearers to customize how gemstones appear in their setting before the final piece is crafted.
