We’ve lately been obsessing over emerging t-shirt brands (After all, what’s a better wardrobe staple than a cool statement tee?’). They easily bring the cool factor to an otherwise plain tee, giving us an highly covetable fashion essential. Amongst the t-shirt brands topping our wish lists, New York based Yeah Right NYC is currently number one for our new season wardrobe.
Creating high quality t-shirts and sweatshirts with hand-embroidered motifs (Can we please have the ‘Ice Queen’ t-shirt right now?), Yeah Right NYC is at the forefront of changing how we look at the classic white tee. Whilst we scroll through their new season look book, we decided to sit down with designer Vicky to discuss all things fashion, the Yeah Right NYC journey and the impact of social media.
The Yeah Right NYC Journey
Vicky: Yeah Right NYC started in 2015 with us stitching inside jokes and sayings among a group of us friends in the lower east side of Manhattan, on our old white tees. We made an Instagram account on a whim and it took off from there. We’ve been riding the wave ever since! But it grew up a lot and definitely became a full time job basically only from January 2018.
The Many Sources of Inspiration
Vicky: Our tagline “Stitch & Poke” came from our love of stick & poke tattoos style. But we’re also inspired by NYC, graffiti, hip-hop lyrics, and silly jokes.
The Impact of Social Media
Vicky: A lot! We basically were able to start a brand by opening an Instagram account and realising that people loved the tees. And we grew our brand through those initial followers.
An Usual Day in Team Yeah Right NYC’s Life
Vicky: There is no typical day which makes it fun. We didn’t start out knowing anything about how to run a t-shirt business so in the beginning, it was about learning something different everyday. From coordinating with our supplier and embroidery ladies to organising collaborations or pop-ups with other artists/brands. We run Yeah Right between NYC and Milan so there are many back and forth trips.
The Favourite Yeah Right NYC Styling
Vicky: A good white tee never goes out of style. Tucked into a pair of good jeans and vans.
The Insider Tip for Aspiring Designers
Vicky: Share your work! We would be nowhere if we hadn’t just put our stuff out there. Through sharing, we’re able to get feedback on what people like and what things miss the mark.
